To say that I had been dreading October 5th for the last few months would have been a huge understatement. The thought of taking Brian on a 6+ hour plane ride had me losing sleep for at least a month. Howard kept telling me Brian would be fine and instead of believing him I just assumed he was being naive. As it turned out the only family member that seemed to have any issues with the move was Daisy.
The car picked us up at our house in NY at 6:30am. After a very pleasant trip to the airport we made it through check in and security in about 20 minutes. Howard boarded the plane early with Daisy and I waited until the last possible minute so Brian could have some time to run around. Our flight took off at 9:45 which was about an hour past Brians first naptime. He very happily sat in our laps sucking on his dumdum while we took off. He fell asleep in his carseat at 10:45 and slept for 45 minutes. Brian spent the remaining 4 and a half hours on the plane watching videos, laughing, walking down the aisle and playing with a few toys. During the nearly 7 hours we were on the plane Brian made some form of a fussy noise for about 38 seconds. Daisy on the other hand spent the first hour of the flight shaking and trying to scratch her way out of her carrying case.
Before we got off of the flight I strapped Brian to my back. I wore him while we got our luggage and took the tram to the car rental area. While Howard was on line at Avis I let Brian walk around. Brian apparently didn't care that there were about 500 strangers around because he ran around laughing and smiling at everyone that would look down at him for the next 15 minutes.
After we got the car we drove into San Francisco to pick up all of Howards things from his old apartment. Brian quietly sat in the back seat and watched a video for 30 minutes. Daisy was just happy to be out of her carrying case and relaxed on my lap. Once Howard was done packing up the apartment at 3:30 (6:30 NY time) we drove to our new apartment in Walnut Creek. Thankfully Brian fell asleep again for about 30 minutes during the drive.
Once we got to the new apartment Brian ran around like a kid in a candy store. He made sure to taste all of the remote controls and mark his territory with a lot of drool. While Howard unloaded the car I got Brians room ready. At this point Brian had been awake for 15 hours with a little more than an hour of sleep. Brians normal schedule is a 13 hour day with 3-4 hours worth of naps. Howard and I put Brian in his crib expecting the worst. He sat up and laughed at us for about 5 minutes. He then threw himself down, smacking his head into the crib mattress. We closed the door and he slept through the night. He woke up at 3:30 which I expected because he normally wakes up around 6:30. I let him hang out in there until he went back to sleep and eventually woke up for the day at 6:45 (9:45 NY time). Up until yesterday I assumed I had the worlds most amazing child but it has now been confirmed.
I will post some photos of the apartment later today.
